Cyber Monday was born in 2005 when a retail trade group coined the term to describe the surge in online shopping as workers returned to their cubicles the Monday after Thanksgiving eager to continue buying holiday gifts. Initially billed as one of the busiest online shopping days of the year, in fact, last year it didn't even make the top 10, according to ComScore Inc., a Reston, Va.-based firm that monitors online traffic.
